Ruth Updike Obituary (1914 - 2016) - Shelbyville, Indiana

Ruth W. Updike, 102, of Indianapolis, passed away Thursday, Dec. 1, 2016, at Miller's Senior Living Community in Indianapolis. She was born Feb. 24, 1914, to Roe Whitinger and Stella Miller Whitinger in St. Paul. She married Carl G. Updike, and he preceded her in death in 1981. Survivors include two sons: William E. Updike and wife, Elizabeth, of Indianapolis; and Robert C. Updike and wife, Jackie, of Indianapolis; four grandchildren, Michael Updike, Emily Pressler, William Updike and Edward Updike; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Mrs. Updike was a lifetime resident of the area. She graduated from St. Paul High School. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Updike was a member of the Wallace Street Church of Indianapolis, and also a member of Forest Manor Methodist Church. She was a 75-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star of Waldron. She volunteered at Community Hospital East for many years. Ruth loved to play the piano and played for the preschool children at her church. She was very active in her churches. She had many friends and loved to socialize with them. Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2016, at Forest Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville, with Pastor Doug Barnes officiating.
