Robert E. Judah Ii Obituary (1938

On Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2016, longtime Fairland resident Dr. Robert E. "Doc" Judah II passed away peacefully following a short illness. He was 78. He was born July 14, 1938, to Abbie (Ator) and Robert Judah in Stinesville. He grew up in Ellettsville. After a standout athletic career Doc graduated from Ellettsville High School and continued his education at Indiana University. While at IU, Doc trained to ride in the Little 500 bicycle race and was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. Following graduation, Doc accepted a job as a biology/chemistry/physics teacher at Triton Central High School. While in Fairland, Doc met the love of his life, Gloria (Elmore). They were married Feb. 19, 1966. After a couple years of teaching, Doc decided to make a career change and enrolled at IU School of Dentistry in Indianapolis. After completing his dental training, Doc opened his own practice in Fairland in 1969. After over 40 years of doing fillings, giving kids "rides" in the chair and squirting unsuspecting patients with water, Doc decided to retire and spend his remaining time with his family and enjoying life. Doc spent his entire life giving back to those around him. One of his biggest passions was his involvement with the Masonic Lodge. Doc was a devoted member and Past Master of Sugar Creek F&AM Lodge No. 279. In addition he was a member of the Murat Shrine, Indianapolis Valley of the Scottish Rite, Shelby County York Rite, Shelby County Shrine Club and Shelby County Past Masters and Wardens, where he was secretary. He was also bestowed the title of "Grand Master of Shelby County." But Doc's greatest and most proud achievement came in 2007 in Washington, D.C., when he was awarded the highest and esteemed honor in Masonry, the title of 33rd Degree Mason. Doc's passion for giving back didn't stop with the Masonic Lodge. He was also very involved with the Boy Scouts. During his time in Scouting, he served on the board of the Gemini District of Central Indiana. He was also an instructor/mentor for Wood Badge, Firecrafter, Voyageur, Order of the Arrow and Medical Explorers. Doc had many passions and enjoyed life's simple things, IU basketball, Triton Central sports, camping, woodworking, model trains, handcrafting muzzleloaders, raising and training bird dogs, going to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, photography, and the hills and quarries of southern Indiana, to name a few. As well, he loved M&M'S, White Castle, anything made from persimmons, oysters and peanuts in the shell. But more than anything, Doc loved being around his family, his wife of over 50 years, his children, grandchildren, sister and all his extended family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Gloria; daughter, Amy Judah (Justin Shaw) of Greenfield; son, Robert E. "Robb" Judah III of Noblesville; sister, Julie Riggs, and her son, Ross, of Ellettsville; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will be from 2 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, 2016, at Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home, 437 Amos Road in Shelbyville, followed by a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. to conclude the funeral service.
