"Living our lives, bound by honor." – Judas Priest
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas Gordon Ott, lovingly known as Doug or "Dougie," was born on April 29, 1970, in Kettering, Ohio, and passed away on July 24, 2026, in Decatur County, Indiana.
Doug lived his life exactly like his favorite heavy metal songs—loud, authentic, fearless, and always on his own terms. He was a proud United States Navy Veteran who honorably served as a Machinist from 1991 to 1995 during Operation Desert Storm. His military service instilled in him a lifelong sense of loyalty, honor, and brotherhood that never faded.
On May 22, 2001, Doug married Jamie Compton. Together they built a life centered on family, laughter, adventure, and unconditional love. Nothing in this world brought Doug greater pride than being the father of his twin sons, James Alexander Ott and Jason Daniel Ott. The bond they shared was extraordinary. They were not only his sons but his best friends, his adventure partners, and eventually his coworkers. Doug cherished working alongside James and Jason as a forklift driver at OSL Logistics, where every workday became another opportunity to spend time with the two people he loved most.
Doug was a devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, veteran, and friend whose fierce loyalty and unforgettable sense of humor could light up any room. Whether he was turning the garage stereo up loud enough for the neighbors to enjoy, riding motorcycles, traveling to new places, attending rock concerts, playing cards with family and friends, casting a fishing line, capturing moments through photography, or simply piling into the car with his boys and beloved dogs for another adventure, Doug embraced every moment with enthusiasm. Most adventures ended the same way—with a warm meal shared together and a little ice cream to finish off the day.
His love for classic heavy metal, muscle cars, and life's simple pleasures reflected the way he lived—with passion, authenticity, and an appreciation for making memories with the people he loved. His greatest joy wasn't found in possessions but in the time he spent with his family, especially his sons.
Doug leaves behind countless lifelong friends, military brothers, nieces, nephews, and loved ones who will forever carry his stories, laughter, and unwavering loyalty in their hearts.
Doug was preceded in death by his father, Douglas Ott; mother, Karen V. Ott; his father-in-law, Daniel L. Compton; mother-in-law, Beverly Jean Compton; and brother-in-law, Joshua Compton.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Jamie Compton Ott; his cherished twin sons, James Alexander Ott and Jason Daniel Ott, all of Shelbyville, Indiana; his sister, Sharon Ott of Crossville, Tennessee; his sisters-in-law, Sarah (Jon) Raison of Shelbyville, Indiana, Shannon (Scott) Roy of Shelbyville, Indiana, brother-in-law, Buddy Compton (Katie Jones) of Atlanta, Georgia; along with a large and loving family of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, lifelong friends, and military brothers who were family by choice.
Doug came screaming into this world with a vengeance and a zest for life, and he lived every single day with that same fire. If you want to honor his memory, crank up the music, throw those horns in the air, take the long ride, share a laugh with the people you love, crack the "thunder", and live life like your mama is chasing you with a wooden spoon.
Rest easy, Brother. Fair winds and following seas. Until we meet again.
Services for Douglas Gordon Ott will be held at a later date and time at the National Cemetery in Dayton, Ohio.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial donations be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research or to the Shelbyville Animal Clinic in Doug's memory.
