Dale W. Shipp Obituary (1931

Dale Weaver Shipp, 84, of Fairland, passed away Friday, July 8, 2016, at his residence. He was born Aug. 25, 1931, to Harold Shipp and Virsel (Weaver) Shipp in Indianapolis. He married Barbara (Valentine) Shipp on Aug. 22, 1952, and she survives. Other survivors include three children: Gretchen McDonald and husband, Roger, of Fountaintown; Kim Shipp and wife, Connie, of St. Paul; and Dale Shipp and wife, Janet, of Fairland; one brother, Harold Edward Shipp of Fountaintown; one sister, Phyllis Crooks and husband, John, of Indianapolis; eight grandchildren: Trent Childress and wife, Katie; Traci Lindsey and husband, Jason; Terri Perry and husband, Jimmy; Kristopher Hancock; Timothy Hancock; Isaac Larrison and wife, Elissa; Ilea Shipp; and Lelia Chougule; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and three sisters, Freida Kehrt, Margaret Sandefur and Beulah Brown. Mr. Shipp was a lifetime resident of the area. He graduated from Moral Township High School in 1949. He received a full-ride scholarship to play basketball at the University of Wichita in Kansas, and also played basketball with the 7th Army team, touring all over Europe. He was named Most Valuable Player. Mr. Shipp was a veteran of the U.S. Army and attained the rank of corporal. He worked in security for Harvester/Navistar, retiring in 1986 after 23 years of service. He also was a courier for National City Bank for several years. Dale had also worked for Granatelli Racing and a couple of other racing teams for several years, and had farmed during high school and several years after his marriage. He was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church and Sugar Creek Masonic Lodge. Dale loved his family and enjoyed attending his grandchildren's sporting events. He loved working in his garden and doing yard work, and his beloved cat, Buttons. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, 2016, at Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home, 437 Amos Road, Shelbyville, IN 46176. Masonic rites will be at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 13, 2016, at the funeral home, with Pastor Don Wells officiating. Burial will be at New Palestine Cemetery. A graveside military service will be conducted by a local veterans organization. Memorial contributions may be given to Pleasant View Baptist Church in care of the funeral home.
